ChatGPT to include conversational ads in responses

OpenAI is considering introducing advertising into ChatGPT, according to recent media reports, signaling a potential change to one of the platform’s defining features: an ad-free user experience.

People familiar with the matter say OpenAI has been discussing several advertising formats, including sponsored content integrated directly into chatbot responses. Unlike traditional display ads, these placements would likely appear only when users ask questions with clear commercial intent, such as product comparisons, shopping advice, or travel planning.

The company has also reportedly developed internal mockups to test how ads might be presented within the ChatGPT interface. These tests remain experimental, and no final decisions have been made about design, timing, or scope.

OpenAI has not publicly confirmed a launch date, and ads are not currently live on ChatGPT. The discussions come as the company faces growing pressure to diversify revenue beyond subscriptions, while competing with other AI products that are already closely tied to advertising ecosystems.

At the same time, OpenAI is said to be cautious about user trust. Any future advertising model would likely include clear labeling of sponsored content, and paid versions of ChatGPT are expected to remain ad-free, at least initially.

Industry analysts say that if ads are introduced, they are more likely to appear gradually, potentially starting in 2026, rather than through an immediate, broad rollout.

For now, advertising on ChatGPT remains under consideration, with OpenAI balancing monetization goals against concerns over transparency, accuracy, and user experience.
