CVE-2025-14533 is a critical unauthenticated privilege-escalation vulnerability affecting the Advanced Custom Fields: Extended (ACF Extended) WordPress plugin. role. - The plugin fails to enforce a server-side allowlist of permitted roles.
- There is no capability check to ensure the requester is allowed to assign privileged roles.
As a result, if a public form includes (intentionally or accidentally) a field mapped to role, an attacker can submit: role=administrator
and WordPress will happily create or update the user with full admin rights.
This is a classic trust-boundary failure:
- Client-controlled input
- Directly mapped to a privileged internal attribute
- No validation
- No authorization check
Exploitation Conditions
This vulnerability is exploitable only when all of the following are true:
- The vulnerable plugin version is installed.
- A front-end form exists that:
- Creates a new user or
- Updates an existing user.
- The form maps at least one field to WordPress user data.
- The
roleparameter is accepted (explicitly or implicitly).

Even if the site owner did not intend to expose role assignment, misconfiguration, copied form templates, or inherited fields can still make the site vulnerable.
Attack Scenarios
Scenario 1 – Silent Admin Creation
- Attacker finds a public form that creates users.
- Submits the form with:
- A valid username/email
role=administrator
- WordPress creates a new admin user.
- Attacker logs in via
/wp-admin.
No brute force. No authentication bypass. No malware needed.
Scenario 2 – Privilege Escalation of Existing User
If the form supports user updates:
- Attacker targets their own low-privilege account.
- Submits an update request with:
role=administrator - Existing account is upgraded to admin.
